According to various reports, 30% of all lost pet incidents in the United States occur on the 4th of July. In order to keep your dog safe, here are tips to help reduce their stress during the 4th of July.

  1. Make Alternate Arrangements: If you’re going to a party that will have fireworks, leave your dog with your friend, with a dog sitter, or at a boarding facility. Making sure your dog is properly supervised is the best way to help them if they do get scared.
  2. Create a Safe Spot: If your dog has to stay home, make sure they have an easily accessible place to escape to. Something like a crate or kennel will allow your dog to safely hide if they need to.
  3. Tire Your Dog Out: Get in as much as exercise with your dog as you can before the festivities, as a tired dog is a calm dog. If your dog is sleepy, they’re less likely to have a strong reaction to the sights and sounds of fireworks.
  4. Use Anti-Anxiety Tools: There are many different options, such as medication, music or anxiety jackets, that may help your dog feel more relaxed. Make sure to talk to your veterinarian or trainer to see what would work best for your dog.
  5. Keep Your Dog Distracted: When the fireworks are starting, try to distract your dog with a long-lasting chew toy. This will help keep their mind occupied and encourage them to focus on something other than the fireworks.

Have a fun and safe 4th of July!
