Selena Gomez‘s weight has fluctuated as a result of serious health issues over the years, and says the public scrutiny affected her self-esteem.

“[The mocking] got to me big time,” she said on Raquelle Stevens’ Giving Back Generation podcast. “[It] really messed me up for a bit.”

In 2014, 27 year-old Selena, revealed she was diagnosed with lupus, a disease that affects the immune system. In 2017, she had a kidney transplant as a result of complications from the disease.

“It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life—it depends on even the month, to be honest,” Gomez said of her changing weight. “So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. In reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life.”

In 2015, Gomez revealed that the body-shaming ultimately sent her to therapy. She’s also avoids social media because it’s where a lot of the body-shaming takes place.
