Sad new development from a story we have featured before. The Internet fell in love with Mark Longo and his rescue squirrel, Peanut.  Longo rescued Peanut after witnessing his mother get hit by a car. He took him in and helped him grow for 8 months before attempting to release him to the wild. He wouldn’t leave and they have been best pals ever since.

They had amassed over a million followers in the 7 years they have been sharing their story on TikTok and other social platforms. Peanut served as the face of a non-profit animal rescue Longo runs with his wife.

@peanut_the_squirrel12RIP MY BEST FRIEND. Thank you for the best 7 years of my life. Thank you for bringing so much joy to us and the world. I’m sorry I failed you but thank you for everything ❤️ Yall we desperately need your help. Help us raise the money to fight this and help @pnuts_freedom_farm continue to help animals like peanut♬ original sound – Peanut_the_squirrel12

But New York authorities raided Longo’s home October 30 and detained him for 5 hours, before euthanizing Peanut and his pet raccoon, Fred.

Social media is now flooded with outrage over why this was done.

RIP Peanut and Fred.
