Angelina Jolie enjoyed an 8-minute standing ovation for the debut of her movie, Maria, at the Venice Film Festival. She was there days before her ex, Brad Pitt, was there walking the red carpet with his girlfriend, Ines de Ramon.

Before the screening, Jolie took a moment to get down on her knees to talk to a fan bedridden with a rare bone disorder. The fan is Italian writer Pasqualino Esposito who has been to the event multiple times and arrived on Aug. 29 in a portable medical bed. Photos and video from the evening show Jolie kneeling in her gown to have a brief conversation with Esposito. He spoke with The Hollywood Reporter through a translator after the encounter and called the A-lister a “fantastic” person with “a very big heart.”

She trained for 7 months on her voice, as she portrayed opera singer Maria Callas. Her voice will be blended with Callas for the movie.
